If you've ever watched an offering plate pass by a visitor who only had a debit card and no cash, you already understand why text to give for churches has become so popular. It lets people give with a text message from their phone, no app download, no envelope, no fumbling for a checkbook. But before you sign up for the first tool you find, it helps to know exactly how it works and what it really costs, because the pricing pages are not always as simple as they look.

What Is Text to Give for Churches?

Text to give is a donation method where a member texts a keyword or dollar amount to a short code or phone number, and the gift is processed through a linked payment system. It's the same idea as texting a donation to a disaster relief fund, just set up for your congregation and your regular giving needs.

Most churches use it for three things:

Sunday offerings for people without cash or checks
Special appeals, like a building fund or mission trip
Quick, spontaneous giving during a sermon moment or event

A Simple Example

Say your church's giving number is 555-0199. A member texts "GIVE 50" to that number. They get a reply with a secure link to enter their card or bank info the first time. After that, future gifts can often be sent with just the amount, no link required, because their payment method is saved.

How Text to Give Actually Works, Step by Step

You set up an account with a giving provider that offers text to give, usually the same platform that handles your online giving.
You get a dedicated number or short code that members will text.
A member texts an amount or keyword tied to a fund, like "TITHE," "MISSIONS," or just a dollar figure.
They confirm payment details the first time via a secure link, then it's saved for next time.
The gift is processed through the same payment rails as your online giving, and it lands in your church's account, usually within a few business days.
The donation is recorded in your church management system so it shows up on the giver's statement automatically, no manual entry needed.

That last step matters more than people expect. A text gift that doesn't sync with your donor records just creates extra bookkeeping work for whoever handles your church finances. If you're still reconciling giving by hand, it's worth reading about modernizing church finances with better tools before you add another disconnected system.

What Text to Give Actually Costs

This is where a lot of churches get surprised. Text to give pricing usually has three separate pieces, and providers don't always list all three clearly.

1. Setup or Monthly Platform Fees

Some providers charge a flat monthly fee for the text-to-give feature itself, often somewhere between $10 and $40 a month, on top of whatever you already pay for online giving. Others bundle it in at no extra cost if you're on a giving or church management plan that includes it. Always ask directly: "is text to give included, or is it an add-on?"

2. Per-Transaction Fees

Just like a card swipe, every text gift usually carries a processing fee. Typical ranges are:

2.5% to 3% plus a small flat fee (often 15 to 30 cents) per transaction for card payments
Lower fees, sometimes under 1%, for bank transfer (ACH) gifts

Some platforms let givers cover the fee themselves with a simple checkbox, which can offset a meaningful chunk of the cost over a year.

3. Text Messaging Costs

A few providers charge per text sent or received, separate from the payment processing fee. This is less common now but still worth confirming, especially if your church sends a lot of giving reminders by text.

A Realistic Monthly Estimate

For a mid-sized church processing $3,000 a month in text gifts, you might expect to pay roughly $15 to $30 in platform fees plus $90 to $110 in transaction fees, so somewhere around $105 to $140 total. Larger churches with higher giving volume will pay more in transaction fees but the platform fee usually stays flat, so the cost as a percentage of giving actually goes down.

Text to Give vs. Church Donation Software With Recurring Giving

Text to give is great for spontaneous, in-the-moment gifts, but it isn't a full giving strategy on its own. Church donation software with recurring giving solves a different problem: helping regular givers set up automatic weekly or monthly gifts so your church has predictable income, not just Sunday spikes.

Here's the honest comparison:

Text to give is best for one-time gifts, guest giving, and special appeals where speed matters more than setup.
Recurring giving is best for members who tithe regularly and want to "set it and forget it," which also protects your budget during slow giving months.

The best setup uses both, ideally from the same provider so gifts land in one system instead of three different reports you have to piece together. If you haven't set up online giving at all yet, our guide on setting up online giving in under 30 minutes walks through getting the foundation in place first.

Is Text to Give Worth It for Your Church?

For most churches, yes, especially if you have younger members, frequent guests, or a congregation that's already comfortable texting for everything else. It removes a real barrier: someone who wants to give but has no cash on them can do it in ten seconds without feeling awkward passing an empty hand along the offering plate.

It's less essential if your giving is already strong through online and recurring channels and your members simply aren't asking for it. Don't add a tool because it's trendy, add it because it solves a giving barrier you can actually name.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign Up

Does this sync automatically with our giving records and donor statements?
What's the total cost including platform fees, transaction fees, and any messaging charges?
Can givers cover the processing fee themselves?
Does it support recurring gifts, or only one-time texts?
How fast are funds deposited into our account?

Giving matters, but so does keeping the season steady after a spike. If your church tends to see giving dip after high-attendance Sundays, it's worth reading how to prevent post-holiday giving drops alongside whatever giving tools you add.

Getting Started

Start by asking your current giving or church management provider if text to give is already included or available as an add-on. That's usually cheaper and simpler than adding a separate, unconnected service. If it's not available, compare two or three providers on the full cost breakdown above, not just the advertised monthly price, and make sure whatever you choose keeps your records in one place instead of scattered across systems.

Text to give won't replace the relationships and trust that drive real generosity in your church, but it does remove friction for people who already want to give. Sometimes that's all it takes.
